The Uninformed Electorate

by: DocJess

Sat Aug 11, 2012 at 13:27:24 PM EDT

Pew has once again polled America to find out what people know. Before you read further, you can take their quiz here. I am not surprised (but as always, greatly saddened) that 61% of Americans don't know who the Chief Justice is. I'm pleasantly surprised that 85% know who the Vice President is. And don't worry, if you're a DCW reader, you're going to get 100%!

It's especially important that the electorate be informed this year. It's not just the the communications arm of the Republican Party (aka Fox Noise) lies outright, but that Paul Ryan is incredibly bright, an engaging speaker, and a good looking guy. He likes to claim that he is "saving Medicare", for example, and then you can watch the audience nod. They like the idea. And because so many people are ill-informed, they believe him.

We need to fight the lies with truths. We need to know our facts. This year, being smart actually counts.

wow!, as a group young females who didnt finish high school (0.00 / 0)
are most likely not aware of much that goes on that effects their lives. scary. you know, i used to think pew was neutral, but they arent, and this poll reflects that. it is almost a push poll in its choice of wording and subject matter.

seems like a disproportionate amount of the questions are asked in a way that pushes wedges issues against obama.

questions seem fine to me (0.00 / 0)
If anything 2 and 3 are biased to Obama, and 1 is towards Romney.

I agree with prezalz (4.00 / 1)
It seemed completed straightforward to me. For example, they asked if people knew who the chief justice was. If it had been a push poll, they might have said something like "Can you name the man who made Obamacare legal, and who is also the chief justice of the Supreme Court?"

pleased to see us old folks know quite a bit. (0.00 / 0)

old folks (0.00 / 0)
I didn't realize Romney had flip-flopped on abortion as well. I thought he at least supported abortion for medical reasons. I don't think it's about age.
