| Back in 2008 I covered the bike sharing program for Denver pretty extensively. I even got to watch now Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper ride a bike inside the convention center. The bikes were used a lot during the convention so I am happy to see they're doing it again in Charlotte. Charlotte is about to get its first bike sharing system.
Several bike sharing stations were set up this week around uptown, including at the 7th Street LYNX station, and on Trade Street in front of the Omni Hotel near The Square. Workers were testing the system Tuesday afternoon. Bike sharing is a system in which people can pay a fee at a self-service kiosk to rent a bike for short trips. - WCNC
One added bonus of Denver's bike sharing program was that it helped to show how much of a loon Colorado Republican gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes was. Republican gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes is warning voters that Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper's policies, particularly his efforts to boost bike riding, are "converting Denver into a United Nations community." "This is all very well-disguised, but it will be exposed," Maes told about 50 supporters who showed up at a campaign rally last week in Centennial. Maes said in a later interview that he once thought the mayor's efforts to promote cycling and other environmental initiatives were harmless and well-meaning. Now he realizes "that's exactly the attitude they want you to have." "This is bigger than it looks like on the surface, and it could threaten our personal freedoms," Maes said. - Denver Post
