Denver – Following the announcement by the Obama Administration and the Department of Homeland Security that as many as one million young immigrants will be eligible for relief from deportation proceedings, Colorado Democratic Party Chairman Rick Palacio released the following statement:
“Our Latino community has known for a long time that President Obama stands alongside us as we seek out the American Dream. Today’s announcement shows that this President is willing to do everything possible to support the youngest members of our community who want to make an impact on our country. In Colorado, where so many of our friends, neighbors, and family members have had to live their lives in limbo, today’s news empowers a tremendous number of people. It is a brighter day for Colorado and the rest of the United States.
“The young people caught up in our broken immigration system are Americans in every way. For many, this is the only country they have ever known. It is home, yet through no fault of their own, they are not able to call it so.
“Today’s step will fundamentally change the lives of many young immigrants, and to complete the job Congress needs to match the President’s leadership and work to pass comprehensive immigration reform. We need a system where everyone can contribute fully to our economy and our country.” |
