Just after midnight Sunday, Senator Michael Crapo (R-ID) was arrested in Virginia for drunk driving. Crapo becomes the first member of either chamber arrested for drunk driving in Virginia since Vito Fossella in 2008. NOTHING can reach the level of pure snark emanating from Vito's arrest. As we wrote at the time:
Vito Fossella has represented the only Republican NYC district since 1997. The seat has been Republican-held for decades. He’s a moderate, the district is moderate. He won a bigger majority than Bush in 2004. Safe, safe, safe, right up until that night in May when Vito went drinking in D.C. and got drunk, drove out to Virginia, and ran a red light.
They’re not kind to drunk drivers in Virginia.
Did he have a good excuse for what he was doing in VA? No.
Could he recite ALL 26 letters of the alphabet in order? No.
He blew a .17: WAY over the legal limit. Vito went to jail.
Did he call his chief-of-staff who lived in the neighborhood? No. He called his girlfriend. One thing led to another, and it turned out that in addition to the wife and kids in Staten Island, there was also this girlfriend and another of Vito’s children in VA. After a bunch of refusals and denials, Vito decided not to run for a 6th term this year. Plus, he’s looking at mandatory jail time.
Vito made an impassioned plea for mercy on the floor of the house, went to jail briefly, and has rarely been heard from again. Although the thing I liked best was not that he went to jail, but that his girlfriend couldn't get a sitter, carried her sleeping then-3-year-old into the police station, and then, because of the lights and the noise, the little girl woke up, looked around, and cried "DADDY!!!" in front of the press corps. Sheer glee.
Crapo failed the field sobriety test by blowing a .11, was polite to the officers, posted bond, scheduled a 4 January court date and issued the following statement:
"I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance. I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me. I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter. I will also undertake measures to ensure that this circumstance is never repeated."
Here's the thing: Crapo is a Mormon. He's actually been a Mormon bishop for the past 30 years. What a Christmas present to us Democrats! Another incident of Republican hypocrisy. Mormons aren't supposed to imbibe coffee or cola, much less alcohol.
Sadly, this is a first offense for the senator, his blood alcohol wasn't that high, he was polite, and therefore he's not going to jail for long enough to miss a Senate vote. But hey, do we really think he'll give up drinking? Not so much, but there is an automatic loss of his driver's license for a year, so he won't be caught for a while. Then again, there's even stricter penalties for driving without a license in Virginia, especially if drunk. He does, however, get an actual criminal record, which never stops Republicans from running again, but it's a nice Christmas gift nonetheless.
