| I know that it's possible to think of Thanksgiving in terms of smallpox-infested blankets, the colonization of a sovereign land....but I like the grade school version of diverse people getting together around a table to eat food. I further like the idea of a day dedicated to gratitude, and am well aware that many people view it as football day. So here are a list of things for which I'm grateful. I hope you will use the comments to add your own. I am personally grateful for my family and friends (2 and 4-legged) whom I love. I am very glad that I have a roof over my head, food to eat, clothes to wear, and good health. I am too well aware that far too many people lack these things, and am grateful for the opportunities available to help. This year, I'm especially grateful for electricity and indoor plumbing, which is still a problem in some Sandy-afflicted communities. Politically, I am overjoyed that Mr. Obama and family still inhabit the White House, and the Bidens are not far away. We won 8 seats back in the House - it may not seem like a lot, but several serious teabaggers are gone, and it's a big win compared to historical numbers for the situation we had. We held the Senate! OFA is committed to keeping people involved moving forward. Landmark legislation will stand, and it's the side of truth and light that will select the next Supremes. Gay marriage has reached a tipping point, and soon will be the law of the land in all those states where reading and science hold sway. Pot is now legal in two states: I'm thinking of taking a vacation...California voted to RAISE taxes for education. We might fall off the fiscal cliff, but that "cliff" is really a curb, and things are looking good for a solution. I am looking forward to the Wal-Mart strike on Friday. I hope it gets the point across that employees are the lifeblood of companies. I am holding out hope that someone buys the recipes for Twinkies, Hostess Cupcakes, HoHos and all the rest. I think they're terrible for a steady diet, but America will lose something if Twinkies are gone forever. There is something to be said for "Americana". So that's my list...what's on yours? |
