Dallas Morning News Calls For 2016 Dallas Convention

by: Oreo

Wed Sep 05, 2012 at 12:48:57 PM EDT

We wrote about a possible 2016 Dallas convention as early as January of 2011. Now the Dallas Morning News is pushing for it.

The Democratic National Convention’s keynote address by San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro is just complete, and a few random GOP convention balloons may still be floating around Tampa. But this newspaper hopes Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and other city leaders are already getting down to work on bidding to host a national political convention in 2016.

As The Dallas Morning News’ Tom Benning reported last week, our city last was home to a major party convention in 1984, when Republicans renominated Ronald Reagan here.

How times have changed. And not just politically. Dallas is enormously different than it was in 1984.

Back then, the original Dallas TV series was the face of our city. The Bank of America tower in downtown Dallas, known then as the NCNB building, was barely half-finished on its way to becoming the city’s tallest building. The West End was pretty much the only downtown spot for conventioneers to gather for food or drink.

Possible convention cities mentioned so far are Columbus, Nashville, Salt Lake, Newark, Indianapolis, Dallas, Phoenix and Cleveland.

After convention season winds down we obviously won't be posting as much. You can be assured that we'll continue to cover all of the 2016 convention news as it comes in.
