Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is in Charlotte this week to take a look at the city and help plan for this fall's DNC.
"This is a city known for its hospitality," Villaraigosa said of Charlotte. "Part of being a host city, from my understanding, is having a great deal of volunteers helping us."
Villaraigosa talked about his ideas for having an open convention where everyone can feel apart of it, and a big part of his role as DNC chairman is to make sure that happens. - WCNC
Villaraigosa will tour the convention sites today.
The Permanent Chair of the 2012 Democratic National Convention, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, will make his first visit to Charlotte since being nominated as chair, on Monday April 2, and Tuesday April 3, 2012. Mayor Villaraigosa will receive updates on convention planning and tour the city and the primary convention venues.
During the Democratic National Convention, the Charlotte Convention Center will be used for caucus and allied group meetings, media workspace, and other special events. Mayor Villaraigosa will also tour the Time Warner Cable Arena and Bank of America Stadium, where official convention proceedings will take place.
The Permanent Chair presides over the convention proceedings, ensuring order, decorum and efficiency as the party nominates its presidential and vice presidential candidates, adopts the national platform and conducts other important business. The Permanent Chair also acts as another national spokesperson for the convention. Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz nominated Mayor Villaraigosa for this role in February, and the nomination will be presented to the Convention Rules Committee and then voted on by the delegates to the 2012 Convention at the opening session of the convention.
