| Utah Republican Party chairman Dave Hansen makes an interesting point about holding conventions in states to help win them: “It certainly didn’t help in Minnesota last time, and it didn’t help in Pennsylvania or New York the two times prior to that,” said Hansen. “So while that might be the thought in some people’s minds, I think at least in Republican politics it tends to be a myth.”
It also didn't help in 1996 when the GOP was in San Diego. (By the way, San Diego was the last major convention held in a convention center, not a sports arena; the Dems last "convention center" convention was in San Francisco in 1984). The last time the GOP won their convention state was in 1992 when they had the infamous Pat Buchanan/culture war convention. Now if the GOP really wanted to ensure breaking this string, they would announce Salt Lake as their host city tomorrow. But they won't. On the other hand, the Dems have WON every convention state they've been in since 1988, when they were in Atlanta. |
