2012 Republican National Convention Site Selection News As the days roll on and convention news only comes from the Republican side, we here at DemConWatch have decided to take site selection into our own hands. You can scroll through our news from the 2012 Republican National Convention and find that they have 3 finalists and are already visiting the cities. The Democratic side is a little more sparse. Two years ago at this time Matt speculated that the Democratic National Convention may be held at an outdoor stadium. As of right now, we don't even know what cities are in the running. We've decided to choose the city for the DNC. We've talked about Charlotte, Philadelphia and Phoenix all being rumored to want to host the 2012 Democratic National Convention. Today we're going to throw another city in the hat. St. Louis Missouri. If you've been following us for a while you'll know we were all over the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver. You'll also know that Barack Obama won the state of Colorado by a 53.5 to 44.9 margin. This marked only the second time Colorado chose a Democrat since 1980. We'll never know if the 2008 convention helped Barack Obama to win Colorado. But what if it did make the difference? Why not try it again in another swing state. Maybe Missouri? Obama lost Missouri and its 11 electoral votes by only 3,903 votes out of the 2,925,205 votes cast. Why not hold the convention in the state's largest city? St Louis is centrally located in the country which allows for easy travel. According to St Louis Convention and Visitors Commission it has 37,700 hotel rooms in the area with over 7800 located downtown. While this isn't ideal it could still work. Three reasons that could make the decision for St Louis an easy one are the 22,000 seat Scottrade Center, Busch Stadium, the Edward Jones Dome and the 502,000 square foot America's Center Convention Complex. All are centrally located downtown. Another big factor in St. Louis being chosen is that it is in a pro-Union state. Unlike other possible contenders like Charlotte, NC, St. Louis is union friendly which is a must for any Democratic Convention. Right now we have no proof that St Louis will be the host city. Call it a hunch from a few people that have years of Democratic National Convention experience. It just makes sense to us. |
