While waiting the for polls to close, there's this:

A mouthy Cook County election judge was booted from the precinct where he was working this afternoon for attempting to vote several times,

And this:

Any afternoon rush hour in the Chicago area on primary day was confined to the streets and did not appear to extend to polling places.

Election officials said voter turnout was poor from the get-go today and didn't appear to get much better as the 7 p.m. poll closing time approached.

At the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners there was worry that turnout could rival the city's record low of just under 25 percent hit in 1958, another year when the economy was in a swoon.

First in the nation primary (0.00 / 0)
I really didn't know that Illinois's primary this year is the first in the nation.  Though it angered me when I read comments today which said, "Why does Illinois have such a ridiculously early primary in a non-presidential year?"

The answer is simple: what does presidential have to do with the timing of the primary?  In Illinois, nothing.  In the Prairie State, we have one primary election and one general election in even-numbered years; we've never (as far as I know; I've been voting here since 1994) had a separate primary in the spring for different offices.  The Illinois primary was always held on the third Tuesday in March (sometimes a problem on St. Patrick's Day for the sobriety-challenged), but in 2007 the day was moved to the first Tuesday in February, putting Illinois in with the rest of the states on that day.

Unlike California (and apparently every other state), Illinois does not spend money on having multiple primaries in one year, so this is it.  The law says it shall be on the first Tuesday in February now, so it is.  If that makes us the first in the nation, well, that's peachy.  It doesn't make us worthy of scorn.

It looks like there is no favorite Republican governor choice.

Florida 19 (0.00 / 0)

Interesting story developing down in Florida in the race to replace Robert Wexler.

On the Democratic side, with 294 out of 356 precincts reporting, Ted Deutsch is leading Ben Graber by a margin of 19,542 to 3,481.

On the Republican side, Edward Lynch has 2,954, Joe Budd has 2,907, and Curt Price has 1,383.

These numbers are based on adding the numbers from Palm Beach and Broward County Election Offices as the State Election Division so far has yet to post a single vote.

Looks like a recount on the way...

GOP primary to replace Wexler might need recount

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - South Florida Democrats have picked a state lawmaker to battle for the seat vacated by former U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler, while the GOP special primary election appears headed for a re-count.

The Republican race was too close to call Tuesday night. With 99 percent of the precincts counted, contractor Ed Lynch had a 37-vote margin over financial planner Joe Budd. Retired police officer Curt Price trailed far behind.

A re-count would be held within five days.

State Sen. Ted Deutch handily won the Democratic nomination. He will face the GOP winner in the special general election April 13. The victor will serve the last nine months of Wexler's term, then run for re-election to a full term in November.

Poetic Justice (0.00 / 0)
Given all the grief that the Repubs gave us in Florida in 2000 and 2006, having a nice recount on the Republican side with candidates spending their time arguing over every vote while the Democrat gets buzy campainging for the April election seems just perfect to me.

Gov. declares Ill. victory, challenger vows fight
February 3, 2010 01:27 AM EST
CHICAGO - Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has declared victory in the state's Democratic gubernatorial primary, even though his challenger says the fight isn't over.

Quinn held a small lead over Illinois Comptroller Dan Hynes early Tuesday morning with not all the votes counted.

With 99 percent of precincts reporting, each man had about 50 percent of the vote.

But Quinn, the embattled successor to disgraced former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, has told supporters he's won the close race.

Minutes earlier, Hynes vowed to fight until every vote was counted.

Looks like its time to move IL to lean DEM (0.00 / 0)
Recent polls show Giannoulias beating Kirk.  I think that its time for the nonpartisan race raters to move Illinois to lean DEM, at the least.
