Netroots vs. "Grown-Up Democrats"

by: DocJess

Fri Dec 18, 2009 at 20:52:18 PM EST

Chris Matthews said that the netroots was not comprised of "grown-up Democrats", and that the netroots neither votes nor is involved with actual politics.

Markos went on The Ed Show the following hour and had this to say:

I couldn't agree more...with Kos.

well, it is somewhat true (0.00 / 0)
as always, there tends to be a generational break in voters, the under 35 set tends to vote less, and of course, that tends to be the bulk of the netroots, but conversely, almost everybody i know that is deeply involved in street level politics are linked to some on line political activity, and younger people who actually work on campaigns, tend to vote in them....

do we have casual ranters and lurkers? sure, but i think the netroots functions as a network for working political types, in today's world, as opposed to 1994, 2000 and 2004, the net is THE WAY to communicate.

HEY!!! (0.00 / 0)
While one of my pet peeves involves the fact that women over 40 are virtually in the netroots (as well as the MSM) with the exceptions of Arianna Huffington and Jane Hamsher -- the netroots is NOT just young.

Upland --- YOU AND I are the Netroots -- and neither of us has been under 35 for a while. In fact, I have a callous on my left foot that's older than 35....

I discount the idea that the internet is just for young people, and that once people get older they are somehow not "allowed" to participate in technology-driven things. I OBJECT!

I agree it's a challenge to get some older people involved on-line - but I have NOT given up. Despite my vacillation on campaign 2010, I am still committed to my pet project of teaching social media to people over 40...

Sorry......it's just a thing that irks me -- as if you turn 40 and you can't possibly learn to blog, tweet, facebook, link-in, text, or use email - as if you hit your 40th birthday and your brain turns to mush.
