Advice to Elected Republicans from David Shuster

by: DocJess

Sat Nov 07, 2009 at 08:00:00 AM EST

Last night on The Ed Show, David Shuster was filling in. On one segment the guests were Markos Moulitsas and Tom Tancredo. The buzz is all about Tancredo storming out because Markos pointed out that Tancredo got a medical deferment from Vietnam service (because of depression) while Markos served in the military. Everybody has that.

I want you to watch the last minute, which is Shuster's comment. He's INCREDIBLY CORRECT.

Laughed my arse off yesterday (0.00 / 0)
When I saw it yesterday I about fell out of my chair. For a long time I have wished they would turn off Tancredo's microphone. Marcos did a great job of doing that, using nothing but the facts.

Sick and tired of war-hawks that used deferments to get themselves out of service acting like they know what the military thinks.

Yes, the VA system many years ago was in bad shape. Today it is one of the best health care systems in the USA. The reason? The Vets receiving bad treatment at VA hospitals spoke up. Proper attention was given that fixed the system.

While it is getting overloaded with the amount of new disabled vets, it's still top notch care.

Anecdotes vs. Data (0.00 / 0)
It's the way that Republicans debate issues (learned from the master Ronald Reagan).  Instead of talking statistics, they talk stories.  That allows them to talk about the significant but tiny percentage of people in other countries who are dissatisfied with aspects of their health care system while ignoring two key facts:  1) Overall, those countries have better health care results than we do; 2) while those countries are more open to new political parties and candidates running for office than ours is, none of those countries have any significant political movement trying to do more than minor reform of their systems while in this country candidates run on making major changes to our health care system.
