Sotomayor Confirmation Hearings set for July 13

by: Matt

Tue Jun 09, 2009 at 13:31:38 PM EDT

As noted in the Quick Hits, hearings for Judge Sonia Sotomayor will be held starting July 13. This is big win for the Democrats, as the GOP wanted to delay as long as possible in the hope that a smoking gun would be found:

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Pat Leahy today indicated that he was tired of Republican attacks on Sotomayor, arguing that it took John Roberts only 72 days to be confirmed from the time he was nominated and that Sotomayor was on a similar timeline.

"There is no reason to unduly delay consideration of this well-qualified nominee,” Leahy said. “Indeed, given the attacks on her character, there are compelling reasons to proceed even ahead of this schedule. She deserves the earliest opportunity to respond to those attacks.” -Politico

And the move was made by Leahy without consulting with Judiciary Committee ranking Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama. It's about time Senate Democrats exerted a little unilateral decision making.

balls, you mean (0.00 / 0)
Well, ok, maybe that is sexist. I am not quite sure anymore if it is PC or not. can I get a little help with that?

My point is that the democrats in congress are so spineless that when one of them does something, like, oh, i dunno, represent the voters who voted them into the majority, we are all just dumbfounded.

The question I really want to know is how do we oust harry Reid as the majority leader in the senate?

Reid's not going anywhere (0.00 / 0)
The only way to oust him is to get 1/2 the current Dem Senators to vote him out, and that's not happening.

If Reid Loses (0.00 / 0)
Well, either that or he doesn't get re-elected. Which isn't too far-fetched a scenario, from the looks of it. I would prefer he win re-election, but what if he doesn't? A new majority leader would have to be selected, and if it were up to me, I'd choose Sen. Russ Feingold. That would never happen, but it would be more likely than my favorite Senator, Mr. Bernie Sanders. It would be cool to have a real fighting liberal in that position. Oh well, one can dream. Besides, I think Sen. Reid will be in good enough shape in 2010 to pull off a win, if a narrow one.

Being leader mutes your politics (0.00 / 0)
Actually, I don't think you want your favorite Senator as leader. Being leader means you have to put some of your own interests aside so that you can "herd cats." Making the most progressive Senator leader means, oddly, that his voice becomes muted.

Chuck Schumer, Barbara Boxer, or Pat Leahy might do a lot more to move the Senate in the direction you'd like.

True (0.00 / 0)
Hadn't thought of that, but you're right. Not to mention, I hadn't realized when I said that, but Bernie Sanders couldn't be majority leader anyway, as he's not a Democrat, he's an (I).

Why exactly? (0.00 / 0)
Why exactly is his position so secure? He is the most spineless leader in the entire senate.
