Caldera resigns due to Air Force One NYC flyover

President Obama accepts resignation of Louis Caldera as Director of the White House Military Office

Statement from White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs:

The President has accepted the resignation of Louis Caldera as Director of the White House Military Office. Attached is Mr. Caldera's resignation letter. Also attached is a report sought by the President and conducted by Jim Messina, deputy chief of staff, and a photo.

The President has asked his Deputy Chief of Staff Jim Messina and Defense Secretary Gates or his designee to jointly review the organizational structure of the White House Military Office and the reporting relationship of its components to the White House and the Air Force, and to make recommendations to him to ensure that such an incident never occurs again.

You can read Caldera's resignation letter here and the full report from the internal review here.

Update from Matt:

[Defense Secretary Robert Gates] wrote that the April 27 flyover, which involved two F-16 aircraft escorting Air Force One low over New York City, had been planned for weeks and coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration liaisons in the region, air traffic control representatives, and tower supervisors. The FAA notified New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's office, the U.S. Park Police, the New York Police Department and other local agencies three days before the flight, Gates wrote in the letter. -Washington Post

Bloomberg was complaining that no one in his office had been told. I wonder if he'll retract that now.

Clear case of difference between Obama and Bush (0.00 / 0)
Wow.

We never once got a report like this from the Bush White House. (If you haven't read it, I suggest you click on the link in Matt's post--it's not that long.) There was a screw-up, everyone involved took responsibility for it, and they then identified the structural problems that allowed it to occur and shared them with the rest of us.

This was dumb and, for some, a bit traumatic. But Abu Ghraib, Katrina response, "Mission Accomplished"...those are just a few of the things the Bush administration implied were due to someone screwing up (generally not them), but we never got a clear report back or any evidence they'd worked to fix the problems.

Ironically, this snafu is for me the clearest case yet that President Obama is a truly unusual and outstanding holder of this office.

Yes, no one is trying to weasel out of it.

Looks like a series of errors.

The public was supposed to be notified 2 days prior to the flyover. And they even took into account that movements of Air Force One aircraft are not advertised by stating they would release that it was a DOD aircraft. Too bad that public notification didn't make it out.

Dude had too many e-mail addresses to check. I have two e-mail accounts that dump into the same e-mail box. Guess they need to do that for him.

Not sure Caldera needed to resign over this, but like has been said, nice to see responsibility taken.
